Abstract

The Research Focus article by Dr Robert Ivarie entitled ‘Competitive bioreactor hens on the horizon’ describes some of the important advances that our group at Origen has developed during the past few years [ 1 Ivarie, R. (2006) Competitive bioreactor hens on the horizon. Trends Biotechnol. 24, doi:10.1016/j.tibtech.2006.01.004 Google Scholar ]. In our recent article [ 2 Zhu L. et al. Production of monoclonal antibody in eggs of chimeric chickens. Nat. Biotechnol. 2005; 23: 1159-1169 Crossref PubMed Scopus (167) Google Scholar ], we show that the monoclonal antibody produced by the chicken oviduct was equivalent to the same antibody produced by Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells with one important exception that we would like to emphasize: the monoclonal antibody produced in the chicken tubular-gland cells is distinguishable by its enhanced effector function, which is a consequence of the design of our transgene.
