Abstract

The author provides a response to “The Retarded, Society, and the Family: The Dilemma of Care,” in which Stanley Hauerwas attempts to establish a moral framework for parenting through observing the actions of parents with children having intellectual disabilities. Treloar's comments on the contemporary situation of caregivers emerge from her perspectives within nursing, disability studies, and perhaps most importantly, experience as the parent of a child (now a young adult) with physical disabilities.
