Abstract

We have theoretically analyzed the influence of retardation effects, due to the finite velocity of propagation of electromagnetic radiation and the inertia of electrons, on the response of semiconductor photoconductive detecting antennas in the terahertz frequency range. We have established that an electron velocity lag relative to a terahertz electric field can lead to an appreciable increase in response time for GaAs-based photoconductive antennas.
