Abstract

Exposure of in vitro preparations of rat and rabbit ileum to gamma -rays from a 60Co source elicited significant increases in tension and in amplitude of the normal contractions. In most cases the reaction could not be repeated, indicating an inactivation or depletion of some active substance. In addition, dose levels of 3000 rads were sufficient to depress cholinesterase activity. Since this dose is too small to inactivate the enzyme significantly the mechanism appears to be one of depletion of it from the tissues.
