Abstract

An x-radiation survival curve was determined for a syngeneic mouse lymphoma, the LSA tumor of C57BL mice, using the effective fraction method. The effective fraction behaves as a unit, most likely a single tumor cell capable of transferring the neoplasm to isogeneic recipients. The survival curve parameters showed a D0 of 103 R, and an extrapolation number of 5.0, and were consistent with TD50 results, obtained at the same time. Dose-dependent increase in recipient survival time was found consistent with small colony observations reported for irradiated cultured cells. It was found that seven cells on the average will contain one effective cell assayed by its ability to produce tumors in 63% of recipient animals.
