Abstract

No significant difference could be found in the numbers of Hylobius pales (Herbst) responding to traps made from sections of the pine bole taken at 3 different heights. Weevil responses were significantly greater to samples of peeled pine material containing abundant fresh resin than to conventional split bolts; and percent response appeared to be inversely related to the distance between the weevils and the pine material. Pine phloem or an ethanol extract thereof in a moisture-containing substrate placed beneath Masonite® panels in lieu of split-pine bolts performed effectively as a bait and successfully trapped pales weevils.
