Abstract
The growing need for engine services in marine environments has resulted in increasing salt and coupled corrosion of abradable seal coatings (ASCs). In this study, the response of NiCrAl-bentonite ASCs to thermal/salt corrosion was assessed. The results indicated that NiCrAl-bentonite ASCs could provide excellent protection for TC4 alloys in marine environments. NiCrAl-bentonite ASCs retained their low hardness and high strength and exhibited good abradability in chloride-rich environments. Compared with the Al-, Ni-, and YSZ-based coatings, the proposed coating demonstrated improved synergy between strength and hardness/abradability. This research provides valuable insights into the reliable use of NiCrAl-bentonite ASCs in marine environments.
