Abstract

Some of the ambiguities inherent in most textbook presentations of the response of purely resistive, inductive, or capacitive circuit elements to sinusoidal excitations are discussed. Only by analyzing explicitly the difference between ideal and real circuit elements can the student obtain a clear picture of why inductive and capacitive circuit parameters behave as they do in the sinusoidal steady state.
