Abstract

A Monte Carlo program is written for the calculation of the response of a coaxial Ge(Li) detector to a pencil beam of photons with energy up to 400 keV. The small effect of the inclusion of electron energy loss straggling and the binding effects in incoherent scattering are shown. The results of the calculations are compared with the full energy peak efficiency, determined experimentally with radioactive low scatter sources, and with the measured pulse height distributions of single γ emitting sources in narrow beam geometry. The calculated response function is used for the derivation of the photon fluence spectra produced by X-ray generators by stripping of measured pulse height distributions.
