Abstract

The lateral spreading effects in the piezoelectric thickness-mode receiver bounded by water and air are analyzed. Namely, the electric potential produced at the solid-air interface of the receiver is calculated by irradiating spatially-bounded ultrasonic waves in water. Results demonstrate: (1) the potential is determined mostly by the interface of longitudinal waves excited in the transducer, but (2) for the ultrasonic beam of narrow width (≃wave length), the excited shear waves contribute partially to the spatial sharpness for the response. Further, the estimation due to Rayleigh's criterion reveals the lateral resolution of 1.9 mm at a frequency of 2.5 MHz.
