Abstract

Abstract A transducer based on the ferroelectric response of a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) film, which would be useful for the development of biosensors, and its application in a thermo-optical photometer are preseneted. Variations of the optical absorption of a solution in contact with the film can induce small temperature changes on it. The sensor response will depend on the intensity of incident light, and thus on the concentration of chromophores present in the contigguous solution. Preliminary tests with a microvolume flow cell (35 μl) using malachite green as a chromophore have been carried out. The results of the experiments performed agree well with the theoretical model developed and presented here. In the model both the heating of the solution by thermo-optical means, and the related thermo-elastic phenomena have been considered. A possible application of this transducer in a microvolume immunosensor is proposed.
