Abstract

An analogue study was made of the void fraction response to power or inlet flow modulation of a vertical boiling channel with saturated feed water. The equations of energy, continuity, and momentum for the system were differenced in the height variable and linearized around steady-state. It was assumed that a variable-density model given earlier could be used to describe the flow in each section, implying that the radial velocity and void fraction response is rapid compared to the axial response. It was found that a minimum of four differenced sections was necessary to obtain the characteristic frequency notch in the void fraction response. The propagation velocity of a disturbance was found to be more closely related to the vapour velocity than to the liquid or mixture velocity.
