Abstract

The response of a large Ge(Li) detector to fast and slow neutrons was investigated. Characteristic gamma-ray pulse height distributions from a few hundred keV to over 1 MeV were obtained and prominent lines were identified. The effectiveness of an anticoincidence plastic scintillator shield, combined with a radiationless neutron absorber and a lead gamma absorber, was evaluated and found to be in good agreement with the calculated response.
