Abstract

Abstract A method to analyze the relationship between forest stand increment and density is described. Basal area growth response is examined by partitioning increment from ranked strata within the stand into increment which is dependent on density change and that which is not. This allows resolution of the total increment to density relationship into a number of recognizable segments. The partitioned increment to stocking relationships are found to be closely approximated by modified Weibull density and distribution functions. The method, illustrated with P. radiata D. Don data, is applicable to a wide range of even-aged forest data and can be used to improve basal area increment models. Forest Sci. 32:243-253.
