Abstract

A new analytical technique, response coincidence analysis, used in conjunction with hierarchical cluster analysis, is outlined. It provides an empirical basis for identification of groups of subjects with similar response patterns. This technique is illustrated in the context of a perceptual study of Mandarin Chinese tones in which large response variability between subjects, due to differences in linguistic background, was observed.
