Abstract
One of the most common maladies seen by the home care nurse is a wound: surgical wound, stasis ulcer, or pressure sore. The objective of direct care is infection prevention and wound healing. In the presence of infection, wounds take longer to heal. This organization organized a team to consider the causes for their higher wound infection rate. They took the time to identify the variables leading to wound infections and were able to support a common "gut feeling" with actual research. As a result of this organization's process improvement, organizations throughout the country are able to benchmark and develop patient-specific care processes to prevent wound infections.
