Abstract

The ventilatory response to inhaled CO 2 at various levels and at four different oxygen levels was studied at an altitude of 4880 m in the Himalaya in four acclimatized lowlanders and four residents (Sherpas). Results in the two groups were compared by using the equation of Lloyd, Jules and Cunninoham (1958) .V = D(P CO 2 − B) {1 + A/(P O 2 − C} relating ventilation V to alveolar P CO 2 and P O 2 throug parameters B, D, A and C. It was found that for the CO 2 parameters B showed no difference, and D though slightly lower in Sherpas was not significantly so. The oxygen parameters A and C were both significantly lower in Sherpas indicating a relative lack of sensitivity to hypoxia. Preliminary results on one Sherpa at sea level indicate that this hypoxic insensitivity is maintained whilst parameters B and D are both below normal sea level values.
