Abstract

ABSTRACT To the Editor:— This is to remind the author and readers of the communication on respiratory arrest and polymyxin B sulphate (196:181, 1966) that this drug is a potent histamine releaser. This and the local pain can be avoided by dissolving the intramuscular dose in 50 to 100 mg of an antihistamine with local anaesthetic properties, diphenhydramine (Benadryl) or tripelennamine (Pyribenzamine), for example. There are few, if any, real indications for intravenous administration of polymyxin B sulfate.
