Abstract

The sixth Word of the Decalogue, “You shall not kill!” means what it says and is valid at all times and in all places. Although originally addressed to Israelite men who lived within the narrow confines of the Jewish covenant community, it carries an inner dynamic and authenticity that has echoed through the ages and is today reflected in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The sixth Word challenges us to discover God as the God of life and freedom and as such to celebrate life and freedom by respecting human life in all its forms and by resisting those who by commission or omission want to violate the life and freedom of others.
