Abstract

Science in civic life is a theme that draws on research from a number of fields of study: sociology, political theory, philosophy, science, communication, and education, among others. In the last decade or so, an emerging body of literature and discussion has combined theory from these fields and begun to synthesize a new, hybrid analytical framework that explores the intersection of the scientific enterprise with citizen engagement efforts and social policy. This section provides an overview of important publications in this relatively new field and a perspective on emerging trends, such as interdisciplinary collaboration, the democratization of science, and the repurposing of science communication. Reflecting the broad scope of these areas of research and discourse, the publications listed here range from mainstream magazines and websites to academic journals and books.
