Abstract

In this paper, resource reciprocal strategies (RRS) for cellular and ad hoc networks are proposed. Unlike the unified cellular and ad hoc networks (UCAN), we consider some device convergence schemes between cellular and mobile ad hoc networks (MANET). Especially, an additional router (AR), a MANET database (MDB) and a MANET management system (MNMS) are added on cellular access device, which will substitute for some routing function on ad hoc terminals. Mobile terminals submit position information to MNMS when they make a registration or when they update position information. Based on the information, AR creates a temporary routing for terminals in the coverage range of access device. Finally, routing table is sent back to terminals which will set up an ad hoc connection via cellular radio access technology. Reciprocally, the coverage range and capacity of cellular network is improved by the help of ad hoc networks. Among resource reciprocal strategies, we create a suited air interface scheduling policy and a position-based routing protocol. These reciprocal strategies bring some new opportunity in convergence evolution of cellular and ad hoc networks.
