Abstract

Traditional Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANETs) experience several challenges in deployment and management due to poor scalability, low flexibility, bad connectivity and lack of intelligence. The integration of Cloud, Fog and Edge Computing in VANETs together with the use of Software Defined Networking (SDN) are seen as a way to deal with these communication challenges. In this work, we propose a new fuzzy-based system for coordination and management of resources in a layered cloud-fog-edge SDN-VANETs architecture. The proposed system decides the appropriate resources to be used by a particular vehicle when the tasks it has to accomplish require computing resources that go beyond those of the vehicle. Based on the output of the system, it is decided whether the vehicle could use the resources of its neighbors, fog or cloud servers. The decision is made by considering the average processing capability of the neighboring vehicles, density of neighbors, latency constrains and the complexity of the task. We demonstrate by simulations the feasibility of the proposed system to improve the management of the network resources.
