Abstract

The optical and resonant Raman spectra of high molecular weight crystalline polyphenyl-acetylene have been recorded. The long wavelength optical absorption suggests a near planar backbone. The Raman spectra show the presence of conjugation between the backbone and side-groups and large shifts of vibrational frequencies relative to other polyenic polymers and oligomers. The origin of these shifts is discussed briefly.
