Abstract

We have measured Ni 3p and 3s photoemission spectra for the Ni 2p core excitation region in NiO with main 3d 8 configuration. At the Ni 2p→3d resonance absorption, strong resonance enhancements are observed for all the satellite peaks of the Ni 3p and 3s ionized states. On the other hand, Ni 3p and 3s main photoemission peaks show no enhancement. This indicates that almost the enhanced peaks arise from multiplets with 3p 3d 8/ 3s 3d 8 configurations and that the lowest ionized states have the 3p 3d 9 L / 3s 3d 9 L (or 3p 3d 10 L 2/ 3s 3d 10 L 2) configurations. A curious behavior of a resonant peak in the Ni 3p photoemission region is found and this resonance peak changes the final ionic-state energy, depending on the photon energies around the Ni 2p 3 2 →3d resonance, and its dependence is 0.65.
