Abstract
Soft x-ray emission through the 4d-4f and 3d-4f resonance of LaAlO3 is studied with monochromatic photon excitation. At the 4d-4f resonance strong mixing of intermediate states over an extended energy range of up to 21 eV is observed. The resonant emission is fundamentally different for selective excitation energies. Inelastic scattering due to charge-transfer excitations from the valence band to 4f and 5p to 4f is observed. At excitation energies above the MV edge we observe Coster-Kronig enhanced fluorescence that refills the 3d hole via 5p and 4f electrons. The experimental data are in good agreement with our calculations.
