Abstract

Resonant interaction between wave packets of the background, short wavelength ion-temperature-gradient mode turbulence and macroscopic, rotating magnetic island is considered. Corresponding contribution to the toroidal torque balance is calculated. This resonant torque is comparable with nonresonant viscous torque produced by turbulent transport of toroidal momentum. Balance of resonant and viscous torques results in the equilibrium island rotation frequency residing in the gap where contribution of the polarization current to the modified Rutherford equation is stabilizing.
