Abstract

The calculation of depolarization for particles of spin 1 undergoing cyclic acceleration is considered. Depolarization may occur when certain relations between the vertical and horizontal oscillation frequencies in the accelerator and the spin precession frequency in the main magnetic field are satisfied. In the relativistic case the spin precession frequency depends on the particle energy and anomalous magnetic moment. The calculations are applied for the case of deuterons in the Birmingham 3-sector 40″ cyclotron and it is shown that depolarization is negligible if the radial field gradient and the first order azimuthal field harmonic are kept small.
