Abstract

This article deals with the new design concept of DC/DC isolated converters for auxiliary drive or Central Power Units (CPU) of traction vehicles fed from DC overhead line. Auxiliary drives present lower power devices in comparison to main traction converters and they are mostly dedicated to generate standard power grid supplying various on-board equipment (e.g. fans, compressors, heating and air condition) and to charge on-board batteries and on-board electronics. The dc/dc isolated converter consists of an input full bridge or half bridge converter feeding a high frequency transformer (HFT) and an output diode rectifier which produces dc voltage bus lines for 3-phase inverters or battery chargers or on-board electronics. In present there is a strong customer demand on weight, size and efficiency of DC/DC isolated converter. Therefore this paper describes new design concept based on resonant input converter feeds the HFT. Zero current switch mode enables increasing of switching frequency and then HFT weight and size elimination and efficiency improvement as well.
