Abstract

Dispersion spectra of Brillouin scattering cross sections are discussed in both opaque and transparent regions. It is found that spectral symmetry of the Brillouin scattering cross sections without exciton effect disappears when the exciton effect is taken into account. Experiments are carried out in CdS by employing reflection light scattering configuration with several lines of argon ion laser in the opaque region and by using transmission light scattering configuration in the transparent region. The observed dispersion spectrum of the Brillouin scattering cross sections shows a good agreement with the calculated curve when the exciton effect and imaginary part of resonant Brillouin scattering tensor are taken into account.
