Abstract

Abstract A simple model elucidates the interaction between a metal surface and a neutral molecule with an absorption line very close to the surface-plasmon frequency. As pointed out recently by Mavroyannis and Hutchinson, this system has an interesting energy-level pattern not calculable in perturbation theory. It is shown that, unfortunately, they used an incorrect Hamiltonian, half the propagator poles they discussed being unphysical artefacts of their procedure. In fact the spectrum exhibits two neighbouring peaks, whose positions and widths are estimated.
