Abstract

The upward leakage of wave energy from a two-layer troposphere into the stratosphere is examined; the changes produced in the natural complex modes of the system by altering the parameters are found to give rise to some quasi-resonance phenomena. Under special circumstances there may exist modes which decay extremely rapidly downstream and these provide a qualitative explanation for some features of observed flows.
