Abstract

A weak resonant enhancement of the Brillouin-scattering cross section is observed as the fundamental absorption edge of cadmium sulfide is thermally tuned through the incident radiation at 5145 \AA{}. The data are compared to light-scattering theory where the parameters are determined by optical absorption. In regions of high absorption, the spectral width of the Brillouin scattering is increased due to the optical wave-vector spread; this provides an independent measurement of the absorption.
