Abstract

Paper is focused on simplified modeling of the railway traction system in 2 dimensional space. The model is based on grid of resistances that represents the tracks, ground, insulations and third party infrastructure. The outputs of the simulations can be used to pre-determine the impact of stray current on the railway system and also on metallic objects buried in vicinity of the track. Model in this paper is developed to simulate the influence of seasonal changes on distribution of stray currents. Seasonal changes in moisture content in soil or temperature influences the resistivity of soil. In this paper, rectifier substation grounding grid resistance is monitored. The value of grounding resistance is essential in development of stray current. Different values of grounding resistances are compared with the floating system. 2 dimensional modeling is with its simplicity and accuracy suitable for preliminary comparison. In case where all necessary measurements are available from the field, the accuracy of the outputs of the simulations are comparable with 3 dimensional models.
