Abstract

A study to evaluate the potential for biological control of the citrus red mite, Panonychus citri (McGregor), on citrus in the San Joaquin Valley, Calif., was initiated early in 1968. Earlier observations led to the conclusion that the native phytoseiid Amblyseius hibisci (Chant) is the only persistent, commonly encountered natural enemy of P. citri in the San Joaquin Valley. This predaceous mite also inhabits citrus and avocado in southern California, where it has been studied extensively by McMurtry (1969) and McMurtry and Johnson (1965, 1966).
