Abstract

ABSTRACT The present study shows that the use of hydraulic diameter and diameter of inscribed circle as geometric variables for square, triangular and centre section accounts for the effect of shape and secondary circulation on the friction factor quite satisfactorily. Resistance relations are developed in terms of these variables for laminar flow as well as for turbulent flow when the surface of noncircular conduit is in the transition state. Simple methods developed for predicting resistance in smooth and rough rigid triangular channels give good results.
