Abstract

The dynamic compression of circular cylinders of different types of steel at elevated temperatures and at high strain-rates were investigated using an experimental drop hammer instrumented with an accelerometer and capacitive-type transducer. Strain-rate sensitivity of high-speed steel at 1055°C was established and the ratio of dynamic yield stress to the quasi-static yield stress was found to be about 8. The experimental results could be expressed with an expression of the type Y = Y 0 + A ln ф m . A method has been established for determining curves of true yield stress at high strain-rates.
