Abstract

Investigations of Heliothis populations in areas of Texas where difficulties in field control on cotton have been reported revealed mixed populations of bollworms, Heliothis zea (Boddie), and tobacco budworms, Heliothis virescens (F.) This was the first record of tobacco budworm as a serious pest of cotton in Texas. Dosage-mortality data were obtained in the laboratory for most of the insecticides currently used for boll weevil and bollworm control against this strain of tobacco bud worm. The results indicated the Texas strain of tobacco budworm was highly resistant to DDT compared with a strain from Florida. These data do not indicate resistance in the Texas strain of tobacco budworms to endrin, Sevin® (1-naphthyl N -methyl carbamate), toxaphene+DDT (2-1), and Strobane® (terpene polychlorinates (65% chlorine))+DDT (2-1), although greater amounts of these materials were required to kill 50% of the population when compared with that of the bollworm.
