Abstract

The buckeye plant in California, when used as a source of nectar and pollen by bees, seriously handicaps beekeeping endeavors within its range through its poisoning effect upon the colonies. Since success in resisting this poison, through the use of Carniolan x Italian hybrid stock, had been reported by a beekeeper, Carniolan x Italian and Caucasian x Italian F1, hybrids, as well as other bees, were tested in 1931. Evidence is in favor of the Carniolan x Italian stock, but even these bees were not entirely satisfactory.
