Abstract

Swiss researchers have combined gene-chip technology with proteomics to study the influence of antibiotics on gene expression (Genome Research, 11, 2001) The team, led by Hans Gmuender at Hoffman-LaRoche, monitored the bacterium Haemophilus influenzae during exposure to the antibiotics novobiocin and ciprofloxacin. They identified a host of genes that were up- or down-regulated by the antibiotics, and the results of this work could be used to study mechanisms of bacterial resistance to antibiotics and subsequent design of more effective antibacterial drugs.
