Abstract

The seismic design of buildings in regions of high seismic risk and hazard has to evolve towards resilience-based design. For today’s societal standards, it is simply unacceptable to design most buildings for the collapse prevention limit state, then just ensuring that live of people is warranted, but an extensive and severe structural damage is tolerated at the expense or lose of building owners in particular and the society in general, besides all the loses related to the building´s usage interruptions for months or years, or a complete loss (demolition). One way to obtain resilient seismic designs for buildings is using hysteretic energy dissipation devices as structural fuses. This chapter is devoted to present a procedure for the resilient seismic design of such buildings suited for the force-design procedure advocated by most seismic buildings codes.
