Abstract

ABSTRACT This narrative inquiry presents seven Hispanic counselors in long-term practice in the Rio Grande Valley (RGV) of Texas and their stories of professional resilience in a health professional shortage area (HPSA). We identified three primary themes: leveraging cultural assets, negotiating balance, and giving back and strengthening future generations and provided excerpts of the participants’ narratives to support these themes. Finally, we discuss advocacy implications at the personal, community, and social level for counselor education and professional organizations with specific attention to fostering professional resilience among Hispanic counselors.
