Abstract
The aim of this study was to identify characteristics and factors that assisted families in the adjustment and adaptation to the chronic illness of breast cancer. A mixed-methods convergent parallel research design was employed. Non-probability convenience sampling was utilized to recruit 104 mothers from a university hospital in the Western Cape province, South Africa. Qualitative data were collected with semi-structured interviews (n = 11), and quantitative data were obtained using seven self-report questionnaires (N = 104). Several family resilience qualities were identified by means of quantitative and qualitative analyses. Findings can be utilized in interventions aimed at strengthening families with mothers who have been diagnosed with breast cancer.
