Abstract

ABSTRACT THE effect of conservation tillage on reducing direct runoff ranges from slight to substantial. At present, the Soil Conservation Service procedures for estimating runoff do not consider the effects of conserva-tion tillage and no-till practices on runoff. To develop the SCS runoff curve numbers for these practices, we assembled tillage and crop data from small watersheds and plots under natural and simulated rainfall from many locations across the country. The residue left on the ground was chosen as the in-dependent variable to represent the effects of various conservation tillage practices. We analyzed these data to determine runoff curve numbers for single and double cropping systems under various conservation tillage practices. These runoff curve numbers for various tillage practices can be used with the SCS procedure to evaluate the effect of tillage practices on runoff.
