Abstract

Thin, stress-relieved, tool and die steel workpieces have been machined with s ingle-pass peripheral electrochemical grinding using a diamond grit wheel, then subjected to a residual stress analysis. Residual stress distributions are presented and these are representative of three fundamental removal modes associated with finish machining. viz. (1) totally mechanical removal, (2) electrochemical removal combined with mechanical removal and a zero overcut and (3), electrochemical removal combined with mechanical removal and an overcut greater than zero.
