Abstract

The author presents an accurate method to calculate the residual fields in case of non-hertzian elastic-plastic contact problems in roller bearings. This kind of analysis requires a complete three-dimensional investigation due to the finite length of the contacting bodies. Previous analyses carried out in two-dimensional case are not able to take into account the complexity of the problem and the so-called edge-effect that is known to reduce the bearing fatigue life. A semi-analytical code previously developed was adapted to account for three-dimensional line contact analysis. A non-linear rate independent isotropic and kinematic hardening model is implemented for the bearing steel plastic behavior. Closed form solutions for residual stresses during cyclic non-proportional loading are obtained from the plastic strains and they are considered as initial stresses at every loading cycle.
