Abstract
The effect of residual stresses, introduced by submerged-arc-welding (SAW), on the crack resistance of full-scale cylindrical pressure vessel (diameter 1200 mm, length ~ 2600 mm, TSt E460 steel 20 mm thick plates) has been studied. This study required the evaluation of residual stress components values and distribution by experimental and numerical approaches. Experiments had been performed on two pressure vessels, in as-welded and stress relieved condition. Crack driving force, expressed by J integral, had been directly evaluated for an axial crack with the tip in heat-affected-zone (HAZ) in both cases.
