Abstract

A contribution is made in the present paper to an understanding of the processes, both temporal and spatial, which underpinned the development of early Johannesburg. The period examined is that from its inception in 1882 to the end of the Anglo-Boer War in1902, here termed the Formative Phase of development. The approach is that of the cultural historian in which the physical fabric is perceived as the outward manifestation of the collective decisions, aspirations, prejudices and interests of various groups.
