Abstract

<h3>PATHOLOGIC QUIZ CASE 1</h3><h3>Mark J. Shikowitz, MD, New Hyde Park, NY</h3> A 60-year-old woman complained of complete obstruction of the left nasal fossa and recurrent sinusitis of one year's duration. The patient gave a history of occasional left nasal epistaxis, constant postnasal drip, and a sense of left maxillary antrum fullness during this time. Paranasal sinus films disclosed a complete opacification of the left maxillary antrum. Left maxillary sinus irrigation was performed twice as an office procedure without relief of symptoms. A computed tomographic scan of the paranasal sinus demonstrated a soft-tissue density in the left maxillary antrum. The patient was admitted to the hospital for a left maxillary antrostomy, curettage, and biopsy. The tissue diagnosis at that time demonstrated antrum mucosa with chronic inflammation and small papillary projections without substantial changes.
