Abstract

In contrast to the majority of psychiatric residency programs, the University of California, Los Angeles, (UCLA) has continued to require an internship year prior to a full three-year residency. To study the influence of this requirement on resident recruitment we conducted a survey of noncompleters of residency applications. Of 121 respondents who commented on the influence of the internship requirement, 52 percent said the requirement was “very important” and 8 percent “moderately important” in their decision not to complete the application. Also important were geographic considerations and the cost of traveling to Los Angeles for interviews. The reinstatement of a required four-year period of postgraduate training in psychiatry may contribute to future shifts in application patterns.
