Abstract

Abstract Experimental data on residence time distribution of solid particles in a continuous flow stirred vessel are presented. They were obtained by means of the recently introduced Twin System Approach The experimental range investigated covered two different types of impeller, two different positions of the outlet and a wide range of hydrodynamic conditions. Solid particles were traced, and the traced phase analyzed, by means of an original technique described in the paper In the whole experimental range investigated, exponential residence time distributions were found. They are characterized by a mean retention time different from that of the liquid phase, mainly because of the difference between the outlet solids concentration and the average solid concentration in the system. These results indicate that, once allowance for the concentration difference is made, a simple perfectly macro-mixed model can be applied in order to simulate the behaviour of solid phases in stirred vessels.
